Thanks to the new Play Services, your phone informs Google about your speed
Google has recently upgraded their Play Services app to include more accurate information from the new APIs. The location API in Play Services includes activity recognitions based on speed and state of the phone.
MobileBurn reported that the API can combine the speed information on how fast someone is travelling and the tilt status of the phone to determine if he/she is walking or running. This can enable developers to inform the fitness apps on what kind of physical activity the user is doing.
