Get fined for crossing the street using your phone

Taiwan is considering starting fining people using their phones while crossing streets

Mumbai: Taiwan is considering ticketing pedestrians who concentrate more on their smartphones and gadgets while crossing the street rather than the vehicles around them.

According to reports from Engadget, ‘Taiwan currently has over 14 million mobile internet users, many of whom lawmakers consider "addicted" to their phones.’

They are considering the fine on the pedestrians in a hope to curb the addiction and cut down on pedestrian road accidents.

The report also stated that ‘According to the government, Taiwanese drivers often don't yield to pedestrians (even when they have the right-of-way).

The present traffic conditions are very chaotic and the situation is critical for pedestrians on foot. When you make a phone call, you are carried away by the conversation and are not alert to traffic and vehicular movements around you. Distractions are the main causes of pedestrian deaths.

The fine to be introduced could amount to around $10 (approx Rs 600). Hopefully, the Indian government thinks of something on the same grounds too.
