Kerala government to file review plea on Mullaperiyar dam issue

Mullaperiyar agreement was signed for 999 years, only 119 years have passed: CM Oommen Chandy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government has decided to file a review petition against the Supreme Court verdict on Mullaperiyar dam issue. The decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday. An all party meeting would be convened soon to discuss the issue and evolve a political consensus regarding the future course, said chief minister Oommen Chandy.

The petition would come up before the same five member Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court. “The Mullaperiyar agreement was signed for 999 years and only 119 years have passed so far. One thing is for sure that the dam would not survive the entire agreement period . So the question was whether a new dam is to be constructed today or tomorrow. Considering the apprehensions and safety of the people we said it should be constructed today,’’ Mr Chandy added.
