Groundwater levels depletes fast

Situation in EKM district worse than last year, say experts

KOCHI: Even as the southern districts in the state have been getting copious rains in the past few days raising the groundwater level, Ernakulam district is going through a drought-like condition with just one powerful rain lashing the place in the past one and a half months.

The temperature has dipped due to the domino effect of the weather condition prevailing in the southern states, but the groundwater is yet to be recharged giving anxious moments to residents.

According to hydro geologists in the Ground Water Department (GWD) the condition in the district is worse than last year, but the district is yet to enter the danger zone vis-a-vis ground water level.

“Last summer Ernakulam district was better off compared to other districts in the state with regard to groundwater levels but this year we are facing a serious concern as the southern districts have fared better with unexpected heavy showers in the past few days. However, we have not touched the danger zone,” said Dr Ajith Kumar, senior hydrologist at the GWD in Preceding the heavy showers on Sunday, the water levels in wells in several parts of the district had dramatically gone down. The situation has still not improved considerably in the absence of heavy summer showers.

According to hydro-geologist Dr Lal Thomson, heavy rains are required to recharge the wells in these areas. “In the case of borewells, it is not necessary.

A rain in Kakkanad can recharge the borewell at Edappally since the borewells recharge from earth fractures,” he said.
Hydro geologists said that they are closely monitoring the situation in the district.
