Demand for Amit Shah arrest intensifies

Shah had made a controversial remark that Azamgarh is “a base of terrorists”

New Delhi: After BJP Uttar Pradesh in-charge Amit Shah on Sunday made the controversial remark that Azamgarh is “a base of terrorists”, his political rivals on Monday dem-anded his immediate arrest and a ban by the Election Commission from further campaigning in the state.

Leading the charge against the BJP for its “communal campaign”, BSP chief Mayawati claimed that Mr Shah’s remark violated the Model Code of Conduct.

“Such a statement could vitiate law and order in Azamgarh and eastern UP. Gujarat can also be termed as a base of communalism and crime. I demand the EC again ban Mr Shah in UP,” she said.

Congress spokesperson Meem Afzal demanded the BJP leader’s immediate arrest like Congress’ Saharanpur candidate Imran Masood earlier. Mr Afzal said, “The EC should not only order filing of an FIR against Mr Shah, but also order his immediate arrest.”

Mr Shah had, been banned once already, for a controversial remark that he made in Muzaffarnagar earlier, which was later revoked.
