Campaigning for 8th phase ends

64 Parliamentary constituencies, set to vote on Wednesday

New Delhi: Campaigning for the penultimate phase of Lok Sabha polls ended on Monday evening with 64 Parliamentary constituencies, spread across 7 states, set to vote on Wednesday in the eighth phase of elections.

The high profile candidates include Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi (Amethi), BJP leader Varun Gandhi (Sultanpuri), LJP president Ramvilas Paswan (Hajipur) and BJP stalwart Shanta Kumar (Kangra).

The remaining 25 seats in Andhra Pradesh, comprising the proposed Seem-andhra state, will also go to polls along with the Assembly seats.

Nearly 900 candidates in in fray in seven states in this phase which will witness a key contest in West Bengal with pressure is on the Left Front to retain the six seats it had won the last time as nine-time MP Basudeb Acharia, veteran actresses Moonmoon Sen and Sandhya Roy and singer Babul Supriyo are expected to give a tough fight.

In Bihar, where 118 candidates are contesting, Lalu Prasad’s wife Rabri Devi is seeking to make her debut in the Lok Sabha from Saran, which is among the seven seats in the state going for polls on May 7. She is pitted against BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy.
