Rain cuts down load shedding hours in Chennai
Chennai: Thanks to the widespread rain received across the state, people living in the districts not only got a temporary relief from the sweltering heat but also from power cuts.
The fall in the mercury by a few degrees has brought down power demand considerably in the state. The districts which were witnessing three to four hours of load shedding till a couple of days ago, got a huge relief from the power cuts.
According to TN Transmission corporation statistics, there was meagre load shedding enforced on domestic consumers on May 4 when the state recorded a total energy consumption of 265 million units and load shedding enforced was only 0.2 MU. The quantum of load shedding has come down from 16.38 MU on May 3 to 0.223 MU the next day.
Attributing the relief from the load shedding to widespread rains witnessed across the state, a Tangedco official said reduction in the usage of air conditioners and agricultural pump sets had brought down the demand for the power considerably over the last two days.
The official said that once the rain stops the demand may go up again forcing them to impose load shedding to bridge the demand supply gap.
“Once the wind power season begins in a couple of weeks, Tangedco will be in a position to provide round the clock power supply,” the official said.
Meanwhile, a few areas in Mylapore and Mandaveli witnessed power cut on Monday due to faults. A Tangedco official said that power was disconnected on St Mary’s Road due to cable fault and was restored soon.
