Bollywood’s leading ladies were seen walking the risqué road recently

Was it because they were far from home?
Bollywood: Our Bollywood stars have always shown a flair for experimenting in fashion and the recently concluded IIFA awards that was held in the US bore one more testimony to that fact. The leading ladies of the film industry went all out to show the world that they could go risqué in their dressing too, much like their Hollywood counterparts. They seem to take much comfort in the fact that this awards night was not on home turf but in the US, which could have prompted them to take certain sartorial liberties.
While Kareena Kapoor, Aditi Rao Hydari and Richa Chadda sported dangerously low necklines, Malaika Arora Khan and Vaani Kapoor dared to bare in backless dresses. Fashion designer Pria Kataaria Puri believes that while Bollywood actresses tend to dress conservatively in India, they get a chance to experiment abroad. She says, “These actresses are at par with the Hollywood fashionistas in their style and red carpet dressing. At international award function or event, they tend to be more experimental and daring as they feel it will be well accepted. On the other hand, in India they are more conservative about skin show. It all boils down to how comfortable you are carrying your outfit.”
Designer Moiz Kapadia also feels comfort is key. “It’s less about risqué dressing and more about what you can pull off. Lady Victoria Hervey in a Gaurav Gupta creation earlier this year is an apt example of risqué dressing, which definitely grabbed eyeballs. From the IIFA red carpet, I admire how well Kareena Kapoor carried her black Armani gown. Deepika Padukone also looked ravishing in a golden Sabyasachi gown.”
Kareena’s look sure seems to be a favourite with the designers. Farah Sanjana says she was very impressed by the confidence with which Bebo carried off her bold outfit. “Plunging necklines look fantastic if worn correctly by the correct body type. Kareena’s outfit at IIFA looked great and chic. Red carpet dressing is high glamour dressing. I also love what Deepika was wearing. Her Sabyasachi lehenga was breathtaking,” she says.
Designer Hasnin Patel doesn’t feel that Bollywood’s leading ladies are competing with their Hollywood counterparts. “Bollywood ladies have their own taste. It’s just that the industry is upping its game and whole style thing has just gone a cut above. Now, what is available to the Hollywood ladies is available to our Indian actresses too.
Take for instance Kareena’s Giorgio Armani. A few years ago it wouldn’t be available to a Bollywood actress. Risqué dressing has become a part of fashion. When it’s someone like Kareena, confidence is a part of her entire persona. She has a great sense of style and I don’t think she needs to copy anybody.”
