Eyewitnesses identify Salman Khan in court, say he came out from driver's side

If convicted, the actor could face a jail sentence of upto 10 years

Mumbai: Salman Khan has been identified by two witnesses in court on Tuesday saying that they saw Salman Khan coming out from the drivers side of the car that ran over a group of people sleeping on the road in a hit-and-run case that has now gone for a re-trial.

One person was killed and several injured in the incident that took place in September, 2002. The case, initially a hit-and-run, went for a retrial since last December. the fresh charges are that of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Salman Khan could face prison up to 10 years if convicted.

One Gouda was the first witness to depose in the retrial going on at a Mumbai sessions court. On Friday, Gouda identified as authentic a piece of the shutter of the American bakery, the mudguard of the actor’s car and glass shards that were submitted by the prosecution in the court.

In September 2002, a Toyota Land Cruiser ran over a group of people sleeping on the pavement in Bandra, Mumbai. Salman is alleged to have been driving the car. However, Mumbai Police claims they have no evidence of Salman driving the car.

Salman Khan was earlier booked for rash and negligent driving. But later the court observed he could be charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He then moved an application for fresh examination of witnesses on grounds that the witnesses had earlier brought milder charges against him. The court granted his application and a re-trail was ordered.
