Campaign ends in Seemandhra

Modi, Naidu and Pavan Kalyan undertook a whirl-wind tour of Seemandhra

Hyderabad: Rapid development of the residuary state, promises to waive farm loans and appointment of two deputy CMs by TDP and YSRCP President YS Jaganmohan Reddy's assurance over his 'five signatures' were the main campaign themes in Seemandhra, where electioneering came to an end on Monday.

BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu and actor-turned-politician Pavan Kalyan spearheaded the election campaign of TDP-BJP combine, while Congress president Sonia Gandhi, vice-president Rahul Gandhi campaigned for their party.

Jaganmohan, his mother and YSRCP honorary president Y S Vijayamma and sister Sharmila extensively canvassed for the YSR Congress.

Polling for the 175 assembly and 25 Lok Sabha seats in Seemandhra is scheduled to be held on May seven and the main contest is between TDP-BJP combine and YSRCP.

The shrill campaign has often been marked by vitriolic accusations mainly between the two regional parties over allegations of massive corruption against YSRCP and "false promises" and "lack of credibility" for TDP.

Modi, Naidu and Pavan Kalyan undertook a whirl-wind tour of Seemandhra by addressing six public meetings in the two regions last week to give a push to the prospects of the alliance.

Announcing that BJP would stand by Seemandhra in its march on the path of development, Modi had asked the voters to choose between "scam Andhra" and "Swarnandhra" (golden Andhra).

Naidu emphasised on his promise of farm loan waiver, his vision for developing Seemandhra on the lines of Singapore and ensuring safety of women.

"I have the vision and experience to build the new state from the scratch. I would work like a 'coolie' for the rapid and comprehensive development of the new state," he said.

He promised to appoint two deputy chief ministers, one belonging to Kapu community and another hailing from backward classes, if the TDP is voted to power.

Pavan Kalyan, who emerged as a star campaigner for the TDP-BJP combine, highlighted the way Congress divided the state and how TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao allegedly insulted Seemandhra.

He also wondered why Jaganmohan kept silent when TRS president allegedly attacked Seemandhra continuously and how come he now stakes claim for the post of Chief Minister.

Senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu campaigned in the Assembly and Lok Sabha seats allotted to the saffron party in the seat-sharing understanding with TDP.

Meanwhile, Jaganmohan Reddy promised to ensure welfare of various sections by promising to make "five signatures" on major promises, which includes depositing Rs 1,000 in a mother's account for the education of two children, hiking old age pension from Rs 200 to Rs 700, setting up a market stabilisation fund for the benefit of farmers and loan waiver for self-help group women.

Sonia Gandhi and Rahul highlighted the decisions announced for the benefit of Seemandhra in the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and its plans for the development of the residuary state.

Congress is believed to be at the receiving end of people's anger against "unilateral" bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Union Minister Chiranjeevi canvassed for the national party trying to ward off the attack against the party.

Former Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who launched Jai Samaikyandhra Party, led the electioneering of the party, which suffered setbacks after several leaders left the fledgling outfit.
