Try tuna sandwich, seafood to reduce depression: study
London: Feeling depressed? You should try a tuna sandwich. According to a report in the Daily Mail, eating the fish helps reduce the risk of depression by 25 %. However, the report also stated that it is applicable only to women.
Having seafood atleast twice a week reduces the risk of depression, the report said. “Omega-3 fatty acids combine with female sex hormones to help the brain fight depression,” it said.
According to the new study, “Researchers discovered that having seafood on the menu at least twice a week reduces the risk of depression among females by 25 per cent. However, for men, fish had no protective effect.”
“A team from the Menzies Research Institute in Tasmania, Australia, tracked more than 1,400 men and women aged between 26 and 36 for a period of five years,” the report said. “The participants kept diaries of their diet – including various types of seafood including fish, prawns and mussels - while details about their mental health were also collated,” it added.
The paper was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
