Guwahati: Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi here on Friday cancelled his scheduled visit to Germany following the killing of 23 Muslim villagers in Bodoland Territorial Council. Emerging from a meeting with senior police officers and home department officers, Mr Gogoi told reporters that the home ministry has assured them to provide additional company of security forces to handle the situation in trouble-torn Kokrajhar and Baksha districts of BTC.
Asserting that his government will not allow separatist group to create panic, he said, “The Army has been called to carry out flag march in trouble-torn areas.” Informing that Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde had called him to know about the situation, Mr Gogoi said, “He assured me of all kind of help from the Centre to tackle the situation.”
The incident has invited serious repercussion in the political circles of the state.
While leading minority organisations of BTC, All-Minority Students Union (AMSU), All-Bodo Minority Students Union (ABMSU) and others have demanded the resignation of Mr Gogoi for his repeated failure in maintaining the law and order and providing security to the people living in BTC.
The powerful All-Bodo Students Union has also condemned the incident while demanding that Mr Gogoi should quit as he has not been able to handle the state law and order situation effectively.
The regional AGP has also condemned the attack on minority villages but blamed the ruling Congress for doing politics with the law and order situation of the state. “The victims of the 2012 communal flareup are yet to be rehabilitated properly. Another riot is an indicator of the utter failure of Mr Gogoi as well as the home minister,” said AGP spokesperson Durga Das Boro.
ABMSU and AMSU leaders claimed violence erupted following a statement by Bodoland People’s Front leader Pramila Rani Brahma claiming Muslims did not vote for BPF candidate Chandan Brahma, who may lose the election.
