In power, BJP may split Maharashtra

RSS is supporting the demand of a separate statehood of Vidharba

New Delhi: The BJP will attempt to create smaller states if Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minister. But this will not be possible without the support of regional parties and the Congress.

The BJP had created Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh by bifurcating Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh during the Atal Behari Vajpayee regime. Recently, it had backed the Congress on a separate Telangana state in both the Houses of Parliament.

But the BJP is divided on the issue of a separate Vidarbha state with the party units outside the region opposing division of Maharashtra despite the RSS supporting the demand.

While the Shiv Sena, the MNS, the PWP and the Left parties have been for the united Maharashtra, the Congress has been lacking a conviction on this issue and the Sharad Pawar led NCP’s stated position on it has been that “it will go with the people’s sentiments.”
The BJP led NDA is still unsure of touching 272 Lok Sabha seats on its own even after seven phase of polling. And if it manages support of non Congress parties like the Trinamool, the BJD, the YSR Congress and, the Dravidian parties to form a government, then it may not touch this sensitive issue.
