Snoopgate incident: Probe panel likely by May 16
New Delhi: As political battlelines get drawn between the Congress-led UPA government and the BJP over ‘Sno-opgate’, the Centre appears to have tied itself in knots as it rushes against the May 16 deadline to name a judge to inquire into allegations of illegal surveillance of a woman in Gujarat allegedly at the behest of Narendra Modi.
On Friday, Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde and law minister Kapil Sibal said the panel will be set up before May 16, but the BJP attacked the move, saying the next government would be within its rights to review such a ‘mala fide’ last-minute decision.
In a direct attack on Mr Modi, Mr Shinde said, “The way the Gujarat CM had snooped into the life of a woman, I am really worried what will happen to women of the country if he becomes the PM.”
The BJP lashed out at the Congress, accusing it of “stooping low” in its “desperation.”
Amid the political slugfest, sources revealed that the MHA is once again altering its last draft Cabinet note, where it proposed that instead of a retired judge, a sitting HC judge will head the probe.
