Special team to probe Chennai twin explosion: Tamil Nadu Police chief
Chennai: A Special Investigation Team would probe the twin bomb blasts that rocked the Bangalore-Guwahati Express on Thursday, leaving a woman dead and 11 others injured.
Tamil Nadu DGP K Ramanujam said after the Railway Police registers the case into the explosion, the investigation will be taken up by a Special Investigation Team.
"It is not a major blast. It is suspected that Chennai could not have been target of those who were behind the blast because the train was running late. Some other location could have been the target", Ramanujam said.
He said police have no immediate information on who was responsible for the explosion in which 11 people were injured.
"It is premature to say what kind of device was used is the blast. Damage to the train is not heavy," he added.
Ramanujam, who inspected the damaged S4 and S5 coaches of the train, said police are thoroughly searching the train and forensic experts and bomb disposal squads have been pressed into service, besides sniffer dogs.
"City police, Railway Police, forensic experts and bomb disposal squads have been searching the coaches thoroughly.
The coaches of other trains are also being checked", he said. City Police Commissioner J K Tripathy, who also visited the scene of blast, said police were investigating the blast.
"Any speculation on who did it...how it occurred is premature. We have no information as of now", he told reporters.
DGP (Elections) Anoop Jaiswal said, "We are picking up clues and any speculation on this is too premature".
Jaiswal said nobody has been arrested in connection with the blasts. However, police sources said a person has been detained and is being questioned.
Security has been stepped up at airports, railway stations, bus-terminals and key installations in the state, including the Kalapakkam Atomic Power Plant here, in the wake of the bomb blasts on the Bangalore-Guwahati Express.
Police said security has been beefed up at the airports, railway stations, bus stations and other vulnerable areas.
"As you know Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd (BHAVINI) and Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) are already under security blanket, we have told our security personnel to increase security", BHAVINI Project Director Prabhat Kumar told PTI.
Reports of security personnel subjecting trains to intensive checks resulting in delay in running of trains have come in from various parts of the state.
Authorities have also enhanced security cover at the strong rooms where Electronic Voting Machines that stored votes polled in 39 Lok Sabha constituencies on April 24, have been placed.
Meanwhile, the Chennai airport was brought under a five-layered security with the city police taking over the security of the peripheral areas.
Top Chennai Police officials were overseeing security arrangements, which included complete screening of all inbound vehicles including two-wheelers even as a strict vigil was being maintained at the cargo area as well as the old airport.
Vehicles in the parking area were also being checked, police said, adding, a dustbin was seized after it was found to be placed without "proper authority".
