The rage of the Titans
Titanfall on the Xbox 360 is a fantastic first person shooter, it is not the ‘COD with mechs’ and is so widely believed to be. Granted the controls are similar to that of COD, but that just goes to add to the ease of access this game offers.
Set in a war-torn future, the game provides the ideal settings for some truly spectacular online matches. Every match you play will have at least one “DID YOU SEE THAT!” moment. As pilots, you have the ability to double jump and wall run, thanks to the standard issue jet pack.
The maps themselves are very well designed, with multiple rush-and-flank routes, with ample cover to duck behind. Then there are the behemoths, the metallic death machines; the Titans. Seeing your Titan drop from the skies above, getting on board and becoming a God never gets old.
The three types of Titans available, all have unique skill sets and feel different. Two things that Respawn gets right are the balance in the game and accessibility for everyone. Thanks to the presence of AI controlled bots. If you are someone that doesn’t have lightning quick reflexes, then killing the bots provides a good alternative to the more taxing hunt for human enemies, removing a lot of the frustration associated with online play.
It’s not all rainbows and sunshine though. The so called online “Campaign” mode feels completely forced; lacking any sort of coherence or sense of immersion. Having Titan chassis locked to completion of this story mode makes it feel like even more of a chore and tiresome.
Moreover, while playing this game I felt a distinct lack of game modes on offer, currently there being just five, and this may affect the game’s longevity. Other than that, Titanfall is a rock solid alternative to Battlefield and Call of Duty and is well worth a try.
