It’s a girl thing
Subash Chandra’s 99th short film is about a short period in a girl’s life
Subash Chandra is a short filmmaker who recently hosted the premiere show of his 99th short film, It’s a Girl Issue. One may wonder at the need to premiere a short film, but Subash makes it a point to do so to make sure that the cast and crew are given due importance and appreciated for their hard work.
The story concerns a brief period in a girl’s life, from teenage until she reaches a stage of mental maturity. Subash’s message through the film is that even if a girl knows what she wants in the man she is inclined to fall in love with and finds someone too who loves her immensely, then leaves her, the girl, instead of getting depressed, ought to take her future into consideration more seriously. Subash says, “Every girl goes through this phase and there are a few cases, where the girl even goes to the extreme of ending her life,” says Subash.
“Through my movie I wanted to show that even if life does not work out the way a girl had planned for it to, she should not get depressed. She should instead become strong, think of her future and believe that fulfillment will happen. In the film, the girl gets depressed for a while after the man she loves moves to another country for work. But later, she understands the situation, takes up a job and then helps a colleague in a similar situation.”
The filmmaker says that the film was inspired by events that befell 12 girls from his college.
“Every second in the movie has been taken from the experiences of my friends from college, be it the story, the sequence of events and the dialogue. Since the theme concerns girls, perhaps if a woman had directed the film, she could have done better justice to the characters,” Subash adds.
About his future plans, Subash says, “We are currently working on our 100th short film, a family drama. We will then concentrate on our first feature film, which we have been planning for long and will go on floors in December this year.”
It’s a Girl Issue, produced by MR Productions, has Priyanka Jawalkar and Kunal Kaushik in the lead. Divya Kashyap plays an important role while Jenny Honey does a cameo. The short film will release online on May 11 on the occasion of Mother’s Day.
