Sonia, Rahul Gandhi boost morale of Telangana Congress workers
Both leaders give credit to Congress in Telangana formation
Hyderabad: Public meetings addressed by AICC president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi in Karimnagar, Mahbubnagar and Nizamabad came as a big morale booster to the Telangana Congress leaders.
While the Telangana Congress’ main rival in the Telangana region, Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao is campaigning extensively, there is no one from the Congress at the local level who has been able to compete and attract crowds.
The Congress’ senior leaders in the Telangana region are confined to their constituencies and cannot campaign across the region. Consequently, the Congress campaign in Telangana has been lacklustre. Only Union minister Jairam Ramesh is touring the districts. The presence of the Congress’ two main vote-catchers thus gave the party’s leaders and cadres a big boost to their confidence.
Both the Congress leaders criticised Mr Chandrasekhar Rao in an attempt to snatch the initiative and emphasised that it is the Congress that granted separate statehood and made the 60-year-old dream of the Telangana people come true.
In her public meeting at Karimnagar, Mrs Gandhi emphasised that the TRS played no role in the preparation of the Telangana Bill.
Mr Rahul Gandhi went on the offensive and criticised Mr Chandrasekhar Rao for making false promises to the people. Both were at pains to give the sole credit for the formation of the new state to their party.
The Telangana Congress leaders are hoping that their speeches will attract hitherto neutral voters to the Congress. They say that if Mr Chandrasekhar Rao now attacks Mrs Gandhi or Mr Rahul Gandhi it will be advantageous to the Congress because the people of Telangana believe that it is due to Mrs Gandhi only that Telangana has come into existence.
