Wedded to polls: ‘Invite’ talk of town

DMK has designed election pamphlets in the form of a marriage invitation

Chidambaram: The election season seems to ignite the innovative spirit in candidates. In a novel attempt, the DMK unit in Cuddalore has designed election pamphlets in the form of a marriage invitation, projecting VCK leader and sitting MP Thol. Thirumavalavan as a bridegroom.

DMK workers have been distributing these pamphlets at the doorsteps of people in Chidambaram and surrounding areas, appealing to them to turn up on the marriage day (April 24) in massive numbers and vote for Mr. Thirumavalavan, who is contesting as the nominee of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA). The pamphlet distributed in Chidambaram constituency reads like a wedding invitation. This creatively designed election pamphlet has become the talk of the town in the constituency. One would mistake it at first to be a wedding invitation. A closer look shows that it’s an election pamphlet, Mr. Thirumavalavan seeking re-election from Chidambaram constituency.

Starting with an invocation, ‘Vaakalargalaukku Thunai’, it refers to Mr. Thirumavalavan as the candidate contesting on the ring symbol with the blessings of the DMK patriarch, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin and Kanimozhi MP.

The event (polling) has been organised from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 24 as per the directions of the Election Commission. The leaders of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) have been projected as friends and relatives extending the invitation to the people.

S. Killai Ravindran, former chairman of Killai town panchayat, said that he got the idea after the DMK patriarch at his election rally in

Chidambaram said recently that he was happy that the Election Commission had allotted the ring symbol to Mr. Thirumavalavan.

Mr. Karunanidhi had said that the symbol, considered to be auspicious, would pave the way for his future family life. This unique invitation has been received with much appreciation without room for any criticism, Mr. Ravindran said.
