Forest Academy to honour activists
Environmental activists to be felicitated for path-breaking work
Hyderabad: The National Institute for Fashion Technology (NIFT), which has a massive rain water harvesting pit on its campus, is one of the few educational institutes that don’t hire water tankers during summer.
The NIFT solved its water problem with the help of Subhash Reddy of Smaran, one of the six environmentalists who are going to be felicitated by the Andhra Pradesh Forest Academy on Earth Day, which is observed on April 22.
Imran Siddiqui of the Hyderabad Tiger Conservation Society and Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL) is another city-based environmental activist being felicitated.
“My entire team has been working for the regeneration and proper management of natural resources since a decade. We implement schemes such as desilting of tanks, strengthening of percolation tank and field bunds and roof-top rainwater harvesting. On the 10-acre campus of NIFT, we constructed four pits in 2011 and this has been one of the most successful projects. The National Institute for Fashion Technology does not need water tankers now,” said Mr Subhash Reddy.
The other grassroot environmentalists who are in the list are Venugopal Reddy of Save Our Storks in Anatapur district, for his decades-old efforts in conserving the habitats of birds, Gunaranjan of Hyderabad, for his contributions in solid waste management and Bhadradri of Eco Club Green, for his active efforts to improve the green cover will also be felicitated.
