Jeans turn hood insulators
Automobile manufacturers are using cotton from jeans make hood, dash and interior padding
Chennai:Of what use can old pair of jean be to an auto company? They can be transformed into hood and dashboard insulators of a car! Manufacturing processes especially in the automobile sector have come a long way in terms of eco-friendly technologies available today. In their bid to show their green concerns, auto companies like Ford Motors India are recycling used cotton from blue jeans and T-shirts to make hood, dash and floor carpet insulators and interior padding.
“We are committed to promote green processes across our value chain. With a vision to promote sustainable development, we have adopted some of these best practices in our Chennai factory as well,” said Mr P. Senthil Kumar, vice president, Vehicle Operations, Ford India. “We are re-using 100% of waste water generated in the plant and have reduced electricity consumption per car by 10%. Also, 100% of hazardous waste generated is either recycled or co-processed in cement industries making it a zero landfill plant,” he added. Extending its energy saving techniques to vehicle and engine offerings, the company has come out with EcoBoost engine to gain fuel economy of up to 20 per cent more.
