Karnataka CM blames Jayalalithaa, H.D. Deve Gowda for Cauvery dispute
Krishnagiri: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah blame former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda and Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa for the Cauvery trouble.
Mr Siddaramaiah was here in Hosur on Saturday morning to canvass votes for Mr A. Chella Kumar, Congress candidate for the Krishnagiri Lok Sabha constituency. He met reporters after his partymen welcomed him at Attibele of Karnataka, 8 km from Hosur in Krishnagiri, on the Chennai-Bengaluru national highway here.
When informed about Ms Jayalalithaa’s repeated charges against the Congress and BJP of depriving Tamil Nadu of its share in Cauvery river waters, he termed her charges as baseless and blamed her and his rival Mr Deve Gowda for being the root cause for the trouble.
“Both (Deve Gowda and Jayalalithaa) are very much aware of their role in the Cauvery river water dispute but they blame the Congress for their mistakes,” Mr Siddaramaiah said, but did not elaborate. He added that his government would abide by the Supreme Court order and is prepared to share Cauvery river waters with Tamil Nadu, based on the situation and storage capacity in the dams of his state.
The Karnataka chief minister also promised to act without hurting Tamil Nadu that depends on Cauvery river for its water needs.
Commenting on the “Modi wave”, as projected by his rival, Mr Siddaramaiah said, “There is nothing like that as projected by them. But there is a silent wave (Congress wave) in the country which will defeat the much hyped fake wave (Modi wave).”
Later, Mr Siddaramaiah began his election campaign in support of his party candidate Chella Kumar. Congress sources said Mr Siddaramaiah, belonging to the Kuruba (shepherd) community, was invited for the poll campaign in the belief that his visit will help Mr Chella Kumar to get the support of voters belonging to this community. They also said Mr Siddaramaiah’s campaign here will divide the votes of DMK candidate P. Chinnapillappa, who is also a Kuruba.
