VK Singh against UPA naming new Army chief

UPA-II government now likely to announce the appointment of the next Army chief

New Delhi: With the UPA-II government now likely to announce the appointment of the next Army chief within the next few weeks before demitting office, a controversy has broken out after former Army chief and BJP leader Gen. (retd.) V.K. Singh questioned such a move.

“The UPA-II does not have the legitimacy to make the appointment now. There is still time. The next government should make the appointment,” Gen. Singh said.

However, government sources said the UPA-2 is fully entitled to make the appointment.

Gen. Singh also criticised the decision by the Centre of superseding Vice-Admiral Shekhar Sinha for the post of Navy Chief, saying that the seniority principle has largely been followed by governments.

The name of Army vice-chief Lt. Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag is likely to be announced soon as the next chief.

Superseded Navy commander files complaint

New Delhi: Upset over being superseded for the post of Navy Chief, Western Naval Commander Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha has filed a complaint with the defence ministry and said that if “justice” is not done to him, he would take voluntary retirement. In his letter to the MoD, Vice Admiral Sinha has complained against being overlooked for the appointment to the top post, sources said. He has also said that if “justice” cannot be done to him, he should be given voluntary retirement.
