EXCLUSIVE: ‘ I’m either shameless or totally without prejudice,’ says Sherlyn Chopra
The scorching actress doesn't mince words in speaking out her views
Chennai: Smoking hot Sherlyn Chopra who has created a benchmark for setting screens on fire, draped in a red lehenga choli, proudly flaunting her assets and flashing killer smiles that could make men weak at their knees, sits down for a freewheeling chat with DC.
She loves revelling in her recklessly audacious nature and asserts that she’s all set to rule the roost in the tinsel town and has set the ball rolling with a promising line-up and conscientious planning.
Sherlyn was quite poised and upbeat while sharing titbits on her upcoming movies Bad Girl and Kamasutra 3D and reiterates that she isn’t ready for a compromise when it comes to leading life to the fullest. She opens up, “Bad Girl, the Mollywood flick to be helmed by filmmaker Shajiyem wherein I essay the role of a super model, will be released simultaneously in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi. Initially, I was sceptical about the role. However, I was floored with the director’s cogent presentation and he convinced me to get on board. I play an ambitious, intriguing and fierce character — a vulnerable lady torn by deceit and failure who craves for love. The movie which will go on floors during mid-May will hit the screens later this year. I do not speak Malayalam and am putting strenuous effort in developing command over the language. The non-judgemental nature of the director was another reason which prompted me to sign this project.”
She went on to share, “I can’t gel with sexists, people with prejudices, hypocrites and people who create uproar over women enjoying sexuality and nudity. And I’m unapologetic for who I’m and what I stand for. I’m today’s woman, candid and a woman of substance. Looking back, I’m glad that I had to confront bitter experiences which helped me become what I’m today. I’m a person who values excellence, freedom and liberation.”
The unperturbed woman quips that she doesn’t consider posting raunchy photos of herself or being the epicentre of controversies as a big deal. She looks at it with openness and a straight-forward approach to life. Sherlyn reiterates that porn is no more viewed as taboo and wonders why it has been looked down as something sinful or evil.
She affirms that the exposure to Western sexual revolution and the association with Playboy magazine brought sea of changes in her life. Post sizzling on the international magazine, she made up her mind to live freely. Sherlyn puts it as, “From then on, I started living life based on my choices and not on obligation.”
Talking about the much awaited movie Kamasutra 3D, she points out that it is a passionate love saga, which is quite contrary to the general notion that it is an erotic film. She also candidly says that those who throng to theatres hoping to watch sexual positions, going by the title of the film, will be thoroughly disappointed.
“Kamasutra 3D is about eternal love, lust and family values — it doesn’t depict erotica as a mere arousal, but as a natural force towards fundamental living. I play Aphrodite, the Goddess of Sexuality. I thoroughly loved portraying the role and not even once did I get cold feet for the role I performed. I’m happy that I didn’t lend my ears to those who asked me to rethink doing this role. They tried to change my mind citing the adverse effects of it post marriage or post motherhood in the future. But I look at it in other way. I want my kids to take pride in the fact that their mom created history by starring in it. I guess I’m either shameless or totally without prejudice,” winks the voluptuous diva.
Bollywood has witnessed an influx of ‘bold’ heroines in the recent past, predominant in the list being Sunny Leone, Poonam Pandey, Rozlyn Khan, Veena Malik, and so on. There were instances where one or the other took pot shots on their counterparts. So, is there a sort of competition among the hotties? A big emphatic ‘No’ is Sherlyn’s answer. She clears the air, “I’m a person who bats for celebration of sexuality and applaud women who take pride in flaunting their sexual appeal. Hence, it is unfair to feel jealous towards others and this stands as a testimony for my friendly nature. I do not bear animosity towards anyone.”
Sunny Leone’s shaking a leg for a Kollywood flick created a huge buzz among the filmy circles. Ask her whether she has similar plans, and she says, “I’m very much open to regional movies. When it comes to item songs, I have two conditions. Ample remuneration and picturisation exclusively on me. I should have lion’s share in the song in terms of screen presence.”
Interestingly, Sherlyn avers that the path was travelled by yesteryear actors like Zeenat Aman, Rekha, and others. She is also content with the fact that Bollywood has started embracing changes with open arms. She observes, “Women-centric films like Highway, Queen, Dirty Picture have received thumping response from audience and this denotes the progressiveness of storytelling in India.
On views pertaining to feminism, Sherlyn says, “Yes, I’m a hard-core feminist. But that doesn’t mean that I’m against men in any way. Feminism is a way of living. I would like to be a force of strength to all women.”
So is she open to the institution of marriage? Quick comes the reply, “What is that?” She gushes with a chuckle, “Of course, I believe in it. The necessities differ from person to person when it comes to marriage. For me, it isn’t a permit certificate to indulge in sex. I will look for companionship and a rock solid relationship. Anyone who could kill me with an amazing sense of humour can easily win my heart. For that matter, I don’t mind getting into a lesbian relationship. I’m open to both the options. I’m a huge supporter of the LGBT community and won’t hesitate welcoming a girl into my life if I find her as daring and dashing as me.”
It is a known fact that Sherlyn Chopra’s popularity hit the roof after the Playboy episode. Her followers on Twitter increased manifold since then — presently she has a loyal following of 12 lakhs and counting. She says, “I like the Twitter family. I love their concern for me and respect their advice. I share a nourishing equation with them.”
On her personal front, Sherlyn asserts that she loves talking to herself and that she’s a naïve person by nature though she pretends to be smart. Sherlyn considers her sister as her best pal and feels blessed in having an understanding and loving sibling.
Sherlyn shares a dream cherished since childhood, “It is winning the prestigious Oscar. I dream about my name being called out for the Best Actress Category amid standing ovation and resounding claps. I hope I will make it one day. Right now, I’m in best form both physically and mentally,” she signs off.
