TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu scares Bharatiya Janata Party, threatens pullout from alliance

Telugu Desam announces alliance end in Seemandhra; BJP begins late night patch-up

Visakhapatnam/Hyderabad: Hectic efforts at a patch-up began on Thursday night after Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu, in a surprise move, unilaterally announced at a public meeting that he was breaking off the alliance with the BJP in Seemandhra, following resentment among TD cadre at the BJP fielding political non-entities in the seats offered to them.

Speaking at an election rally in Gajapathinagaram in Vizianagaram district, Mr Naidu said, “Coming under some pressure, the BJP fielded weak candidates, which will not serve the purpose of the poll alliance between both the parties. Opponents will benefit from fielding weak candidates. That’s why we have decided to withdraw from the alliance in Seemandhra. We entered into a poll pact with the BJP to see Narendra Modi as Prime Minister, which will benefit both the country and the state. But if this is the case, it is not going to serve the purpose.”
According to sources, Mr Naidu spoke to Mr Modi and BJP president Rajnath Singh and expressed his displeasure over the selection of weak candidates.
There have been other irritants. A kingmaker like Mr Naidu has had to deal with Tier II leaders like Prakash Javadekar, BJP spokesperson, and M. Venkaiah Naidu. There is still uncertainty over Mr Naidu’s proposed joint campaign with Mr Modi in Seemandhra. And Wednesday’s announcement by actor Pawan Kalyan that his Jana Sena would enter the poll fray would have riled the Telugu Desam further.
