Campaign set to reach its peak in Chennai
Chennai: With about a week to go for the Lok Sabha election in the state, the candidates in the city’s three constituencies and also those contesting from the Alandur assembly constituency facing bypoll simultaneously on April 24, have intensified their campaign despite the blazing sun.
Many have even undertaken door campaigns. The lighting of crackers whenever the candidate visited important junctions and the flurry of flags and festoons appearing like waves, besides presentation of shawls, each time a candidate arrived, presented a carnival-like atmosphere.
The next few days will see a flurry of activity, as the leaders of many political parties would hit the campaign trail and take the campaign to new heights.
AIADMK supremo and chief minister J. Jayalalithaa who commences her campaign in the city from Alandur and Central Chennai on April 19 is expected to electrify the campaign.
Single-handedly she has been firing barbs at her political adversaries and she did not even spare the BJP, thus silencing critics who attempted to gain political mileage over her initially not training her guns on the saffron party. She would campaign in North and South Chennai on April 20 and 21.
BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi took the city by storm when he sharply criticised the work culture of the two major Dravidian parties. DMDK founder Vijayakanth and his wife Premalatha and MDMK chief Vaiko who campaigned for NDA came as a shot in the arm for BJP.
The Congress ploughing a lone furrow is bereft of star campaigners. Interestingly, fledgling AAP’s leaders are attempting to impact the voters. Yogendra Yadav, head of national election campaign team is set to address a rally in the city on Wednesday.
