Actor Yami Gautam, who is currently shooting for films in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, says no one guarantees success in a creative industry like movies.
“When I was doing Vicky Donor, I only thought it was going to be a good film. But I never thought it was going to be a huge hit and even the response from overseas audience was amazing. In a creative industry like films, you can only give your best. Success is really not in your hands,” she says.
Yami says since she doesn’t have a filmi background, she chooses films that she wants to do and doesn’t divide her projects into south and north. “Be it Total Siyappa or Gauravam in Tamil, each of my projects is special to me. Now, I’m excited to do a commercial film like Action Jackson (Hindi) directed by Prabhu Deva and the Tamil-Telugu bilingual Courier Boy Kalyan (Tamilselvanum Thaniyaar Anjalum in Tamil),” she says.
However, Yami admits that south has been dear to her right from the beginning of her career. “My very fist advertisement was shot by the established cinematographer from south, Rajiv Menon. My first film was a Kannada movie. And I can’t explain how happy I was when I heard that A.R. Rahman wanted me to be part of his Raunaq project. He is such a grounded person, he has ideas and a great sense of humour. It’s stupendous to have been part of the video,” she says.
In Courier Boy Kalyan, Yami plays a salesperson at a Kadhi Bhavan store. “It’s a wholesome entertainer with a social message. I usually derive confidence from the director and you can’t say that Premsai is a debutant. He is so perfect and clear about what he wants,” says Yami.
Yami, who began her career with soap operas and appears in a number of commercials, doesn’t have time for TV now. “Movies and TV are two different industries. Since I’m focusing on movies, obviously I can’t devote time for television. But I owe a lot to television,” she says.
The actor refused to comment when asked about the recent Twitter troll against her fairness beauty product endorsement.
