Special unit formed to curb fixing
To eradicate corruption, the CBI has formed a group to handle cases related to sports fraud
New Delhi: In a bid to eradicate corruption and match fixing in sports, the CBI has formed a specialised unit to handle cases relating to sports fraud and illegal betting. The unit, sources said, will coordinate with other law enforcement agencies of the world apart from liaising with sports federations and State police forces to check the menace of match fixing and other corrupt practices in sports.
According to sources, announcement about the formation of the unit is likely to be made on April 15.“Officers of the unit will also coordinate with Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to help frame policies that would build deterrence in the system”, sources said. A DIG level officer will head the unit.
Sources further said, “The ministry concerned is in the process to finalise a bill to criminalise sport frauds which will help to provide much needed teeth to various agencies to take stringent action and will stand legal scrutiny. “The new unit of the agency would also help other agencies in training and education regarding the menace of corruption in sports”. The agency sleuths will also remain in touch with officials of the states police who are already probing cases involving certain cricketers, they added.
It may be recalled that the CBI had probed the infamous cricket match fixing scandal in 2000, involving former South African skipper Hansie Cronje, who later died in a plane crash. The agency had filed its probe report on the basis of an intercepted conversation between a bookie and Cronje.
The scandal had shaken the cricketing world after Cronje confessed to fixing games. The BCCI had also banned two Indian players for life after the CBI report became public. The CBI in its probe gave a clean chit to former skipper Kapil Dev.
