Guwahati: Notwithstanding the presence of armed rebels in the northeastern states, polling for six Lok Sabha seats in Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh passed off peacefully on Wednesday.
While Arunachal Pradesh recorded more that 60 per cent polling for two LS seats despite inclement weather, Manipur recorded 80 per cent polling. About 71 per cent votes were cast in Nagaland and Meghalaya recorded 66 per cent polling despite call of poll boycott by Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council in Khasi Jaintia Hills region.
Yumsum Matey, a Congress candidate from Khonsa Assembly constituency in Arunachal Pradesh was abducted by some armed rebels, said IGP (law and order) Satendra Garg adding, after the intervention of the security forces, he returned safely. Polling was also suspended in four booths after miscreants burnt down poll material, officials said.
“We decided to stop polling in four stations after miscreants burnt down poll material in a station in Sarli of Kurung Kumey district,” said state Chief Electoral Officer Chandra Bhushan Kumar.
At a disputed area under Longleng district of Nagaland, bordering Assam, security forces prohibited entry of polling officials and setting up of polling station.
After casting his vote at Sagalee Nagaland Chief Minister Nabam Tuki said the party would emerge winner in both the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls.
Repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, and development were the major issues in the election this year.
