Chandrababu Naidu cashes in on Modi wave
TDP chief gets flak for going back on his word to ally with BJP
Hyderabad: Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu continues to get flak for allying with the BJP and trying to cash in on the Modi wave, as state BJP president G. Kishan Reddy once put it.
The Congress and YSRC fielded his former lieutenants — C. Ramachandraiah and Ummareddy Venkateswarlu — for declaring that the TD-BJP alliance was in the nation’s interest.
Mr Naidu’s own pronouncements are now coming home to roost. Immediately after the Godhra incident, the TD politburo headed by Mr Naidu had demanded the ouster of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and had passed a resolution stating that “unless Mr Modi resigns we would be guilty of eroding public confidence and failing to provide fair and just governance.”
The TD had reacted strongly to reports that Mr Modi was trying to dissolve the Gujarat Assembly post-Godhra and accused him of 'trying to make political capital out of a human tragedy'. Despite these fiery pronouncements the TD nevertheless went ahead with an alliance with the BJP in 2004.
Even recently Mr Naidu had criticised Mr Modi for the latter’s comparison of riot victims to puppies who get crashed under the wheels of a car. On several occasions, Mr Naidu had said that he could not think of aligning with the NDA.
