North East to kick off General Elections on Monday
Voting will be held in nine phases from April 7 to May 12
Neew Delhi: After spirited electioneering by political parties, it is now the turn of the people to cast their precious votes from Monday onward in a nine-phase election to choose members of the 16th Lok Sabha.
The UPA, after two terms, seems to be facing a strong anti-incumbency mood and is facing a challenge from the BJP-led NDA, besides regional parties that hope to form an alternative front.
On Monday, six Lok Sabha constituencies in two states will go to the polls — five in Assam (Tezpur, Kaliabor, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur) and one in Tripura — Tripura (West).
A total of 64,41,635 voters in five Assam constituencies may exercise their franchise on Monday, while there are 12,46,794 voters in Tripura (West). They will decide the fate of 51 candidates in the fray in these six seats, including Union ministers Ranee Narah and Paban Singh Ghatowar, former Union minister and sitting MLA Bijoy Krishna Handique and Assam CM Tarun Gogoi’s son Gourav.
The EC has tried to ensure adequate security, with paramilitary forces rushed to the two states to foil any disruption by insurgents.
After six constituencies vote on Monday, 99 Lok Sabha seats across 18 states will to the polls on Wednesday and Thurs day, including Delhi, that will vote on Thursday.
