Fake mails citing RBI on the rise

Fraudsters are using the names of reputed organisations such as Unicef and RBI to fool people

Hyderabad: Fraudsters have begun using the names of international non-profit organisations like the UNICEF to fool gullible people by sending phishing mails claiming to pay money to families for “a better life.”

The emails say, “The Unicef has come to conclusions and has drafted out some sustainable amount of money for the upkeep of your children and your entire family. We have disbursed the sum $2,700,000 on your behalf, in order to help you maintain your children and establish good business for their future.”

Nothing of this sort is ever done by any international organisation. The mail then asks the recipient to call a person for further details on how to claim the money. The recipient is inevitably asked to deposit some amount to claim the non-existent fund.

It seems as if there is no end even to phishing mails in the name of Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan. Mails purportedly from the RBI, claiming to settle debts incurred by the British government have been on the rise. The RBI has time and again issued warnings against such fraudulent mails saying the central bank never sends mails to anybody.

However, some gullible people still believe these fake emails. The RBI issues warnings nearly every month against different forms of fraudulent mails sent by fraudsters. So far, the RBI has issued at least 20 such warnings.
