Academy award winner Mickey Rooney dies at 93

He was the first teenager to ever be nominated for an Oscar

Mumbai: Hollywood actor Mickey Rooney died on Sunday April 6, according to multiple media reports. The news was first reported by TMZ.

The legendary star died at 93 and is survived by his eighth wife Jan and nine children.

Los Angeles Police Commander Andrew Smith said that Rooney was with his family when he died Sunday at his North Hollywood home. Smith said police took a report but indicated that there was nothing suspicious and it was not a police case and he had no additional details on the circumstances of Rooney's death. It's likely no one in show business history will ever match Rooney's career for sheer length and variety.

Mickey Rooney was born Joe Yule Jr. on September 23, 1920, New York. He made his first film appearance in 1926, and the following year played the lead role in the first Mickey McGuire short film. It was after this popular film series, that he took the name, 'Mickey Rooney'.

Rooney has received multiple awards including, a Juvenile Academy Award, an Honorary Academy Award, two Golden Globes and an Emmy Award. He was also the first teenager to ever be nominated for an Oscar when he was honored in 1940 for his role in 'Strike Up the Band.'

He made an appearance in 'The Muppets', in 2011 and in 'Night At The Museum' in 2006.
