Elections 2014:Hung House likely in Telangana state

There will be a triangular contest in Telengana with TRS going alone

Hyderabad: TRS’ announcement on Friday about going alone in the ensuing Assembly elections in Telangana to take on the Congress and TDP-BJP combine, might lead to a hung House in the new state.

In the 119-seat Telangana Assembly, the majority mark for a party or combine to form the next government would be 60.With the TRS giving a firm “no” to an alliance with the Congress, it is now certain that there will be a triangular contest in majority of the 119 Assembly segments in Telangana.

The 2009, delimitation of Assembly constituencies across the Telangana region have ensured that the Majlis party is comfortably placed in at least nine segments regardless of its political opponents. This means there will be tough fights for the remaining 110 segments between the three principle parties.

The TRS with all its strengths, including inducting several potential candidates from other parties, is still weak in Khammam, Nalgonda, parts of Mahbubnagar, Medak and many segments under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits, which acc-ounts for close to 50 segments. In this scenario, it is next to impossible to reach the magic figure by winning all the remaining 60 seats.

Similar is the case of the Congress in districts like Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Nizamabad and parts of Medak accounting for 40 Assembly seats which are considered the TRS bastions.

As far as the TDP-BJP combine is considered, they are strong in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation area barring the Muslim dominated Majlis segments and in Ranga Reddy. By itself, the TDP is strong in Khammam, parts of Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Warangal and Adilabad districts.

In other words, there won’t be a clear-cut sweep by any particular party or combination, which might lead to a hung house with no party getting to the required magic mark of 60 seats in Telangana.
