Polls in Bengal headache for Jaipur housewives

Domestic helps working at Jaipur, hailing from West Bengal, have taken leave to cast their vote

Jaipur: Come elections and Jaipur’s women will have to make tryst with brooms. No, it has nothing to do with Aam Admi Party’s symbol.

The domestic helps working here, hailing from West Bengal, have already alerted their employers for an unscheduled holiday around April 17 as casting vote guarantees extra income, free trip and free ration for these families.

And, hence with all household chores it is indeed a sweating time for the families here.

“My maid had declared a month in advance that she would be going home to cast vote,” said Poonam Singh who has to attend to an ailing mother-in-law. “It is really tough for me to manage things without a maid since I have to take care of everything as my husband works in Delhi. My younger son’s Class XII board exams are also underway,” she rued.

There are approximately 30,000 domestic helps from West Bengal mostly from Cooch Behar district of the state says Mewa Bharti, president of Rajasthan Mahila Kaamgar Union, which has almost 10,000 domestic helps as its members of which

70 per cent are from West Bengal.

According to Ms Bharti, whenever there is election in West Bengal the domestic helps go there to vote.
