Hits or just hype?

Tollywood film collections seem to be nothing short of imaginary
Hyderabad: A new trend seen in Tollywood is that as soon as a film releases, the makers claim that the movie has collected extraordinary revenues in the first day or first week, just to increase the hype about the film.
However, in most cases, the figures are not correct. Interestingly, some of the films that do get great revenues, are not hyped up. For example, while Balakrishna’s Legend had a good opening, the makers claimed that the film had collected more than Rs 33 crore in the first week. The producers are unwilling to give the official revenue figures or how they arrived at that number.
The Mohan Babu-starrer Rowdy released on Friday and according to the PR agency, the first day’s collection was more than Rs 4 crore.
“I don’t want to name any particular film or person, but I can say that it has become a practice in Tollywood that many filmmakers are giving high figures about their film’s revenues. I think this is one kind of publicity they are doing,” says Suresh Babu, adding that producers are often not willing to share the correct figures because of income-tax and other problems.
Meanwhile the Sampoornesh Babu-starrer Hrudaya Kaleyam is running to packed houses.
People are going crazy about the film and the star. “We have released in nearly 150 screens in Nizam and all theatres are full; we are adding a few more screens due to the rush,” says Raj Kandukuri, the film’s distributor.
Though the film is doing well, the makers are not going overboard with publicity about the collections. “We know our film is doing well and we never expected that it would get this much openings,” says Kandukuri.
Similarly, Uyyala Jampala, which was made with a low budget of below Rs 2 crore, went on to collect more than Rs 15 crore. But the producer or the director have never talked about the revenues. “If you know the film is good and doing well, there’s no need to talk about the revenue. It will come as expected,” says Suresh Babu.
Though the makers often give out great figures, when it is time to list the top grossers of the year, some of these films do not even figure in the top 10 list.
