Stay on local poll results: Supreme Court

Petitioners contended that announcement of results would affect the ensuing elections

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court on Friday granted an interim stay on the counting of votes and declaration of results of municipal corporation elections on April 9.

A two-member bench was dealing with a special leave petition challenging an interim order of the HC which directed the State Election Commission to declare the municipal poll results on April 9.

The counsels for the petitioners contended that announcement of results of civic body polls would affect the ensuing elections for 16th Lok Sabha and AP Legislative Assembly, scheduled to be held on April 30 and May 7 in the state.

They urged the court to direct the SEC to declare the results after the general elections. Both sides have been told to file counter affidavits. The bench will hear the case again on Monday.
