Congress rebels add to the woes of the party
New Delhi: Desertion, dissension and resignation continue to plague the Congress, which some feel is now fighting with its back to the wall.
In yet another embarrassment for the party, Union textiles minister K.S. Rao resigned in protest against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
Though there was speculation that he was talking to BJP chief Rajnath Singh, Mr Rao claimed he had no plans to join the saffron forces. Sources, however, claimed that after Daggubati Purandeswari, he could be the second Central minister to switch sides to the BJP.
Meanwhile, Congress candidate from Gautam Budh Nagar (Noida) in Uttar Pradesh, Ramesh Chand Tomar, threw in the towel and joined the BJP on Thursday. The election in this constituency is due on April 10.
To add to the party’s woes, its candidate against BJP PM nominee Narendra Modi in Vadodara Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat, Madhusudan Mistry, was arrested on Thursday for unlawful assembly, violation of prohibitory orders and rioting.
