Address of Rahul Gandhi kicks up a row in Amethi

Reports claimed that Rahul’s application for residence proof had been dismissed

Lucknow: The Congress on Thursday denied reports appearing on TV channels that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s application for proof of residence in his Parliamentary constituency Amethi had been rejected by the sub-divisional magistrate of the area.

A statement emailed by Akhilesh Pratap Singh, a Congress MLA and also a close aide of Mr Gandhi, said that no such application for residence proof had been moved either by Mr Gandhi or any other designated person and, hence, there was no question of the same being rejected. He termed such reports as “completely false and baseless”.

TV channels and news agencies had put out reports earlier in the day claiming that Mr Gandhi’s application for residence proof had been dismissed on the grounds that there was no proof to show that he is a resident of Amethi or even occasionally stays in his constituency.

Mr Gandhi is locked in an electoral battle with BJP’s Smriti Irani and AAP leader Kumar Vishwas and the two opponents could have used the issue to dismantle the “outsider” tag being put on them by the local Congress leaders.
