Political parties turn opportunistic
Hyderabad: Though it is not uncommon for political parties to have seat adjustments and alliances with different parties, this time the rank opportunism displayed by parties is unprecedented.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to judge which parties are friendly and which are not as one-time foes turn friends in the blink of an eye in the race for votes.
Take the CPI, a national party, which has in principle decided to oppose the Congress in the entire country, but barring Telangana, where it has permitted the Telangana state unit to strike alliances with the Congress.
The Telangana state CPM leadership has criticised this peculiar stand of the CPI and has announced that it will not have an alliance with the CPI in Telangana since the latter has seat adjustments with the Congress which is responsible for all the misdeeds in the UPA’s 10-year rule.
But the same CPM Seemandhra unit secretary, Penuballi Madhu, on Wednesday, said that his party has no objection to an alliance with the CPI in the state as the CPI is not going to have seat adjustments with the Congress like in Telangana.
When it comes to the Telugu Desam tie-up with the BJP, the Communists call it an unholy alliance and question how a secular party like the TDP could have thought of adjusting with the BJP, a proven communal party.
However, when other parties try to talk about seat adjustments or putting weak candidates against the MIM, the Communist parties never utter a word of criticism.
The CPM, which has several times branded MIM as communal, is now keeping quiet when other secular parties attempted friendship with the MIM.
The Congress is extending support to MIM by fielding weak candidates against it. The Telangana Rashtra Samiti too is willing to sail with the Majlis and announced that it is ready to have an alliance.
It’s a similar story with the TDP and the BJP. The TDP had regarded the BJP as a communal party that was trying to divide society in the name of religion. Yet today, it is making adjustments with same party and defends this decision on the grounds that it is necessary to defeat the Congress which is the bigger evil.
