Village elders penalise youth for speeding, wearing shorts
Hyderabad: To inculcate discipline among the youth, the village elders of Kolipyak in Jakranpally mandal have taken unusual measures. As per their diktat, youths who drive motorbikes rashly and who wear shorts in public have to pay a penalty to the village development committee (VDC).
The village development committee has erected speed breakers in Kolipyak village, which is 35 km away from Nizamabad district headquarters. In addition, the committee is also imposing Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 penalty on those who over-speed. As a result, young people have become more careful about over-speeding recently.
The committee took the decision about shorts as women, particularly girls, were complaining about young men roaming around in them, especially two-thirds shorts. Reacting to the complaints, the village elders imposed a ban on wearing shorts in public, violation of which would invite a fine of Rs 1,000.
Reportedly, a few have already had to pay the penalty for these two offences to the village development committee but by and large, the village youth are following the driving and dress code norms in Kolipyak village.
Speaking to this newspaper, Jakkula Srinivas, a B.Com (computers) first-year student said the village development committee first warns the youth. If the errant youth fails to pay heed, a fine is imposed.
“We are abiding by the decision of the VDC, which consists of our families and relatives,” he said, adding that not only had the young men of the village mended their ways, they were becoming inspirations for the youth of neighbouring villages too.
Meanwhile, the village development committee is also paying incentives to people to inform about illegal activities.
T. Ajay, a B.Sc second0year student said that he was proud of the fact that the youth of Kolipyak village were disciplined thanks to the guidance of the elders. He added that the Jakranpally police had not allowed a DJ sound system to any Ganesh mandali in the mandal to avoid law and order problems, but had allowed a DJ for Kolipyak because of the discipline in the village.
