Kollam cops get complaints via WhatsApp

Public can inform police officers about violation of law via WhatsApp

Kollam: Policing the cyber way, the “WhatsApp Commissioner” group by the Kerala Police received a warm welcome from the public which exchanged information with the police on the cross-platform mobile messaging application.

“We have got over 100 responses from the public after a single day of the launch of the programme. The responses even included greetings and well wishes to the police and a few complaints on traffic blocks in Thiruvananthapuram on which we have taken quick action,” said H. Venkatesh IPS, DIG and commissioner.

Meanwhile, the application is yet to get popular in Kollam going by the fewer responses from the public and is mostly used by civil police officers to alert superior officers regarding violation of law. “I received pictures of illegal flex hoardings sent by civil police officers through the app instead of taking a picture and attaching it via mail,” said Kollam commissioner Debesh Kumar Behra said.

The service offers access to police commissioners and SPs in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Pathanamthitta.
