Lok Sabha polls: Sonia Gandhi steps up the big fight
New Delhi/Mewat: The Congress shifted gear and went into an aggressive mode, with party chief Sonia Gandhi spearheading its attack against the lotus brigade.
After addressing a rally in Delhi on Sunday, Mrs Gandhi moved on to Haryana on Monday and stepped on the accelerator to expose the Narendra Modi-led BJP.
Mrs Gandhi, who usually hits the campaign trail after all party candidates are announced, is expected to criss-cross the country in the next few weeks.
Addressing a rally at Mewat, Haryana, on Monday, Mrs Gandhi trained her guns on BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi, and while she did not name him directly, said his party’s only ambition was to capture power at the Centre, and for that it was
“misleading people” by shedding crocodile tears.
Tearing apart the BJP’s “development plank,” Mrs Gandhi made it clear that along with development India also needed a government to protect and safeguard secular values.
“The BJP have only one target that is the PM’s chair and for that they are misleading people... These days the BJP leaders are changing their disguise and shedding crocodile tears,” Mrs Gandhi said amid huge applause.
Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda and AICC general secretary Shakeel Ahmed were also present at the rally.
The Congress will now begin a double-pronged attack, with Mrs Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi zeroing on their arch rival.
Speaking at Mewat, Mrs Gandhi said the Lok Sabha polls “are not only about the development of the country but also to safeguard the constitutional framework which our freedom-fighters, forefathers bestowed on us after much struggle and suffering.
She added, “This Constitution recognises our secular values and teaches us how to respect them.” She declared that the Congress “will fight for a country where it is not important what our religion, language or place of birth is, or in which caste we were born, but we will fight for a country which is secular and where it is important that we all are Indian.”
