Liverpool top English Premier League table with 4-0 win over Tottenham
London: Liverpool took advantage of an inept defensive display by Tottenham to cruise to a 4-0 win at Anfield on Sunday, and return to the top of the English Premier League for the first time since December.
An eighth straight win for Liverpool was never seriously in doubt from the moment Luis Suarez scored his 29th goal of the campaign in the 25th minute, adding to an own-goal by Younes Kaboul inside two minutes.
Philippe Coutinho’s low drive in the 55th and Jordan Henderson’s free kick, which crept in past a mass of legs in the 75th, finished off Spurs and fuelled the growing belief that Liverpool can win a first English league title in 24 years.
Liverpool are two points above Chelsea with six games left. Manchester City are four points back in third but with two matches in hand.
Earlier, City were held to a 1-1 draw by an improved Arsenal side on Saturday while Chelsea were stunned 0-1 at Crystal Palace. Everton won 3-1 at bottom club Fulham to close to within four points of the top four.
City went ahead in the 18th minute when Silva prodded in after a shot from Edin Dzeko came back off the post.
Arsenal centre-back Per Mertesacker almost doubled City’s lead early in the second half, the ball trickling inches wide of goal after goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny had pushed a Jesus Navas cross against him. Within moments Arsenal were level, as Lukas Podolski crossed from the left and Flamini steered the ball into the bottom-right corner.
