Movietheque: Young & Restless

Varun Dhawan talks to us about the pressures of fame and more

The one-film-old Varun Dhawan now has four films coming up this year. Life is hectic for the Student Of The Year actor but he’s learning to deal with the perks and pressures of fame. Ask him what’s the toughest part and he confesses, “Managing my finances is certainly stressful. I have to sit with my CA and file taxes. My father guides me but over the past year, I have learnt to look into it myself.”

Varun says that he has become more mature as a person and also very protective of his family. “During the shoot of Main Tera Hero, dad was very unwell and I was scared because I didn’t know how to handle the situation. All my life, I have seen my mother look after him and my parents have always been the ones looking after me, and not the other way round. So, for the first time I had to manage such a situation all by myself and I just grew up after that experience,” he says. Varun continues, “My dad has always been my hero. When I was a child we lived in a 1 BHK flat. Dad was going through a bad phase in his career at that time but he turned everything around. Today we have all luxuries. Seeing him in a vulnerable condition really affected me.”

Another challenge of stardom, according to Varun, is dealing with constant link-ups. The actor was linked up with former co-star Alia Bhatt and now the gossip mills claim that he is back with his ex-girlfriend Natasha Dalal. Varun, however, maintains that he is single. He says gossip doesn’t bother him anymore. “You can’t blame celebrities for getting affected because of the power of the media. After Main Tera Hero, I plan to disappear, lie low for a while. Gossip about my relationships would affect me earlier but not anymore.”

While the actor has his family for support and advice, he reveals that brother Rohit’s wife Jaanvi is the one he goes to whenever he needs a pep talk. He says, “My bhabhi is like an elder sister. I knew her much before they got married. She manages my life more than anybody else and gives me the right advice. When I get some time off from shoots she makes sure the family has meals together, watch movies or just talk about what is going on in each other’s lives.”

In between shots, when he gets some time for himself, Varun likes to catch up on American sitcoms. “I’m addicted to the latest season of Breaking Bad, True Detective and Family Guy,” he says. The young actor idolises Salman Khan. Varun says, “Yes he is an inspiration and I’ve always looked up to him.”
