Outer Ring Road checking in top gear for polls

The checking may be having some effect since the number of fatal accidents has dropped

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad traffic police will intensify checking and special drives on the Outer Ring Road this coming election season. In the last two months, 2,490 cases were booked for driving violations and Rs 22.2 lakh collected in fines.

The checking may be having some effect since the number of fatal accidents has dropped by 60 per cent. Six deaths and six injuries were reported in the three months since January this year, which is half the number reported for the same period last year. Illegal parking has also reduced by 70 per cent.

Wrong parking, driving in the opposite lane, general lack of lane discipline are still among the major violations. Busy junctions such as APPA Junction, Rajendernagar and Gachibowli have proved to be the most dangerous for pedestrians with three of the six deaths occurring at these junctions as pedestrians crossing the highway were run over by speeding vehicles.

Avinash Mohanty, DCP Cyberabad, said that since the patrolling had started on the ORR (January 19 to March 19) six deaths were reported, of which three occurred at Dundigal where the vehicles are inoperative and three others at APPA junction where there is no patrolling.
