Andhra Pradesh High Court slams Andhra Pradesh booze policy
Hyderabad: Ghanapurapu Ravi, a native of Warangal who killed his wife, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court before he moved an appeal before the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
While dismissing the appeal, Justice L. Narasimha Reddy expressed deep displeasure over the manner in which the state was pursuing its liquor policy and spoiling families.
The judge said, “Unfortunately, this is not only the case where a young person who had a bright future before him, became slave to intoxicants, thanks to the government of Andhra Pradesh, which has taken every possible step to make liquor available at every nook and corner of the state through its aggressive marketing policies.”
The judge added, “This court is rather pained to note that in majority of the cases, which are the subject matters of the appeals arising in similar circumstances, while male youths have got spoilt on account of liquor addiction, the effect, thereof, is felt by the unfortunate women, whose lives are taken away in gruesome and cruel manners, under intoxication.”
The bench said, “Though we expressed our displeasure about the irresponsible manner in which the state is pursuing its liquor policy and spoiling families, particularly from the weaker sections of the society, we feel that a time has come when the state also must be made to pay for its irresponsible and anti-social policies.”
