Coal scam: CBI questions Prime Minister's key aide

The SC on March 10 refused to grant more time sought by CBI to file 5 chargesheets

New Delhi: The CBI is now preparing to file five chargesheets in the Coalgate scam case before the trial court by March 26.

Sources said the CBI, which recently questioned T.K.A Nair, adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in connection with the alleged scam may, also record the statement of a former coal secretary before filling the chargesheets.

The Supreme Court on March 10 refused to grant more time sought by the CBI to file the five chargesheets in the scam and directed the agency to file them by March 28.

The agency recently questioned Mr Nair in connection with alleged irregularities in allocation of coal blocks which included granting of a block to Hindalco at Talabira despite it being rejected by a screening committee of coal mini-stry. Sources said that a detailed questionnaire had been sent to Mr Nair which was replied by him.
