Election 2014: Subba Reddy for Visakhapatnam, 3 Jagan Reddy's kin in poll fray
Hyderabad: With finalisation of Y.V. Subba Reddy’s name as YSR Congress MP candidate for Visakhapatnam Parliamentary seat, the number of people contesting from Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s family has increased to four.
Mr Subba Reddy, husband of Y.S. Vijayalakshmi’s sister, was holding the party reigns when Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy was in the jail and played a crucial role to steer the party in the absence of the YSRC chief.
While Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy’s cousin Y.S. Avinash Reddy is contesting from Kadapa as MP, the YSRC chief will be in fray as MLA candidate from Pulivendula and his maternal uncle P. Ravindra Reddy as MLA candidate from Kamalapuram.
Despite cadres of north coastal AP districts demanding that the party should field Sharmila from Vizag Lok Sabha seat, Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy has decided to go ahead with Mr Subba Reddy as Vishakapatnam MP candidate.
Leaders and cadres from Vishakapatnam, Vizainagaram and Srikakulam had opined that Ms Sharmila contesting from Vizag would have positive impact on the party and enhance its chances of sweeping the polls.
Sources in YSRC said Mr Subba Reddy was asked to begin canvassing in Vizag. But as he was busy dealing with zilla parishad and mandal parishad elections, he would be going to Vishakapatnam on April 1 to start the campaign. Local senior leaders of YSRC in Vizag were also infor-med about Mr Subba Reddy’s candidature.
Initially, Mr Subba Reddy had sought ticket from Ongole. However, Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy was keen on Chennai businessman Bommireddy Suresh Reddy for Ongole. Even Balineni Srinivas Reddy, the former minister who is the brother-in-law of Mr Subba Reddy, did not object the candidature of Mr Suresh Reddy for Ongole. As Ongole ticket has been allotted to Mr Suresh Reddy, Mr Subba Reddy was left with no option.
With former Union minister D. Purandeswari is likely to contest from Vijayawada, Mr Subba Reddy candidature was finalised for Visakhapatnam. Otherwise, Ms Sharmila would have been a candidate, said a party source.
