Assam police files case against Rahul Gandhi, chief minister Tarun Gogoi
Jorhat: A police case has been filed against Rahul Gandhi, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC Chief Bhubaneswar Kalita in connection with the incident of a woman being allegedly killed by her husband for 'kissing' the Congress Vice-President at an interaction last month.
Women's organisation Nari Mukti Sangram Samiti filed the case in Jorhat police station in upper Assam under IPC sections 354 and 306 IPC against the three on Friday evening.
Section 354 relates to assault or criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty while Section 306 relates to abetment of suicide.
The Samiti in its FIR alleged that Gandhi, Gogoi and Kalita failed to take measures to stop their party women workers from kissing Rahul that led to a man killing one of the women who was his wife.
However, the police had then denied that any of the women who had planted a kiss on Gandhi was killed. According to the victim's neighbours, Bekajan Gaon Panchayat councillor Bonti Chutia (38) had attended an interaction of Gandhi with women party workers in Jorhat on February 26 evening.
The neighbours claimed that on her return home, her husband Someswar Chutia(44) had arguments with her as he was against her going for the interaction and was unhappy to learn about her hugging and kissing Gandhi.
When the news of Bonti kissing Gandhi attracted wide publicity in the area the next day, the neighbours alleged her husband got furious and fought with her after locking her up in a room before setting her ablaze pouring kerosene on her.
Someswar got burnt critically when they had a physical tussle between them as Bonti tried to save herself, the people claimed.
According to police sources, Bonti died of 95 per cent burn injuries in Jorhat Medical College Hospital, while her husband was also admitted to the Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh in a critical condition.
Jorhat district Superintendent of Police Amanjeet Kaur had denied the presence of Bonti in the interaction stating "Bonti was not present in the interaction with Rahul Gandhi at Kachari Maiden in Jorhat on February 26 evening. Her burn case is unrelated to Gandhi's interaction meet".
